Lake Erie College Athletics Hall of Fame
Catherine Frasher Shaw, known to many as "Kay" came to Lake Erie College in 1954 where she served 16 years as Associate professor of Physical Education and head of the department-- as well as Area Chair of Human Development before being granted the rank of full professor in 1970. She retired in 1987.
During her 33 years at Lake Erie, Kaye either supervised or taught archery, tennis, bowling, badminton, field hockey, skiing, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, softball, riding and sailing. She also served as advisor to the Dwan club, the synchronized swimming club, for 28 years.
Before coming to Lake Erie, Kay worked as assistant professor of Physical Education at the University of Maine and instructor in Physical Training and assistant in intramurals at the University of Texas. She earned her bachelors degree in Physical Education from Boston University's Sargent College of Physical Education, and her masters degree in the same field from Smith College.
She was inducted as a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. She served as counselor for numerous camps, taught junior high, and for 20 years was a national basketball volleyball and field hockey official.
Shortly after retirement from the Physical Education department, Kay rejoined the Lake Erie staff as an assistant to the Dean for the Academic Program Abroad. Today, she continues to serve as a volunteer, specializing in the preparation and placement of Lake Erie College students going to The Netherlands.
Upon Kay's Retirement, Lake Erie College established an endowed scholarship in her honor. The fund was started with gifts from alumni, colleagues, student and friends. The Catherine F. Shaw Performance Scholarship today is awarded to provide merit-based scholarship opportunities for women who have demonstrated leadership in high school and college and who have the potential for leadership on the Lake Erie College campus.
Throughout her entire association with Lake Erie College, she has exemplified service and dedication to her students and college. The Lake Erie College Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of the efforts and contributions of Kay Shaw to the college's athletic program and department with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 1996.
