Lake Erie College Athletics Hall of Fame
Joanne Szadkowski majored in health, physical education, and equestrian studies at Lake Erie College and received her B.A. degree in 1981.
Her Academic Term Abroad was spent at Kelletts's Riding Center in Ireland. She played volleyball and basketball for three years and was an outstanding player; she earned letters in both sports all three years, was awarded Most Valuable Player in both sports, and served as captain for both teams. In addition Joanne played for two years on the Lake Erie College softball team. During her senior year she received the "Most Outstanding Leadership Award" for all three varsity teams at the spring all-sports awards program at the Manor House. She rode and competed regularly and a recipient of the Jane White Lincoln Award.
Joanne then because a staff member at Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby, Ohio. She was appointed first as a health and physical education teacher, student activities director, and athletic coach. During her time at Andrews she has coached volleyball for eleven years, basketball for eight, softball for four, and field hockey for one. She started the volleyball program at Andrews in 1982. In 1984 she became the Athletic Director, a position she held for six years until she was appointed to Dean of Students in 1988. She also continued to teach physical education and coach volleyball.
In 1986 she received a Master's Degree from Kent State University in Social Physicology of Sport and Motor Behavior. Joanne also was a member of the National Association of Women in Education. Since College, her athletic activities have focused on outdoor adventures. She continues to ride and her passion for backpacking has led her to mountain ranges all over the country, most recently a month long expedition to Alaska.
In recognition of her athletic achievement the Hall of Fame Committee honors Joanne Szadkowski as an inductee to our Athletic Hall of Fame April 21, 1993.
