Nancy Marilee Smith graduated from Lake Erie College in 1978 with a double major in Equestrian Studies and Sociology.
During her four years at LEC, Nancy was an intricate member of the Dressage team. Nancy was a member of the Gold Medal Team at the Dressage Prix de Ville in 1977 and earned a Bronze Medal in 1978 at the United States Dressage Federation. In 1987, Nancy was the recipient of a Silver Medal at the Olympic Sports Festival, where she rode "Felit". The following year, Nancy represented the United States and brought home the Bronze Medal from the North American Championships, where she was also riding "Felit".
In 1992, Nancy was endorsed by three-time Olympian Robert Dover, confirming her depth of talent, determination, and contribution to the sport of dressage. During 1995, another Olympian by the name of Michael Poulin endorsed her. In the same year, she was declared by the United States Equestrian Team to be among the top 12 dressage riders in the nation aboard her mount "Focus".
Twenty-one years after graduating from Lake Erie College, Nancy was still being recognized for her riding abilities. She was the second alternate to the Dressage Pan-American Team. She was also ranked sixth in the nation for the Prix St. Georges/Intermediare 1 com-petition, riding "Etias".
Nancy currently lives in Mt. Dora, Fla., and continues to pursue a berth on the United States Olympic Team.
The Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all these accomplishments by Nancy Marilee Smith with induction into the Lake Erie College Athletic Hall of Fame on May 19, 2001.
