Martha Newman, after attending the University of Pittsburgh and Lakeland Community College, came to Lake Erie College to complete her Bachelor of Science degree cum laude with a major in Psychology in 1984.
During her two years at Lake Erie, she participated on intercollegiate basketball, cross country and softball teams. She was basketball captain both years, receiving the Most Valuable Player award her senior year.
Her interest in basketball continued after graduation, both as a player and coach. She has been an assistant varsity coach at Lakeland Community College and Andrews School for Girls. She also was head coach for junior high softball and basketball teams at Andrews, and was the school's first head coach for cross country.
Since college graduation, Martha has dedicated her life to "at risk" youth. Presently, she is program officer at Cleveland's Youth Development Center, coordinating plans and acting as a consultant for intake and pre-release procedures for nearly 100 youths who have been involved with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court system.
Previously, she held similar positions at the Lake County Juvenile Justice Center (Painesville), at St. Vincent Charity Hospital (Cleveland) and the Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau (Shaker Heights). Concurrently, she has pursued graduate studies in Clinical Psychology at Cleveland State University.
The Lake Erie College Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of these efforts by Martha Newman with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 22, 1998.
