Box Score HARROGATE, Tennessee - After the winter weather of northeast Ohio postponed the first two games of the Storm's season, the Lake Erie women's lacrosse team was finally able to kick off their season as they traveled down south to Harrogate, Tennessee to face off with the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters. The Storm battled through a tough Tennessee rainstorm for much of the contest, but they would fall by a score of 16-2.
After the Railplitters took an initial lead, Corinne Shimek was able to open up the scoring for the Storm with a goal off of a free position shot late in the first quarter. This would be the Storm's only scoring play of the quarter, and they would enter the 2nd period trailing 5 to 1.
In the second, the Storm would have trouble containing the Railsplitters offensive attack as Lincoln Memorial would extend their lead to 9-1 as the game entered the halftime break. Unfortunately for the Storm, the third quarter would be more of the same. Lincoln Memorial would take a commanding 15-1 lead into the final period.
In the fourth, Lake Erie would get back into the scorebook with a goal from Shannon Smith as she was able to convert on another free position shot for the Storm. The Railsplitters would add two more goals of their own, and the final score would read 17-2 favoring Lincoln Memorial.
Statistically, the Storm were led by the two goal scorers of Corinne Shimek and Shannon Smith. Defensively, there was a strong showing from Emma Rhoades with 3 caused turnovers. Cassidy Bourne would add 10 saves for the Storm at the goalkeeper position.
The Storm women's lacrosse program is not done with their contests for this week however. On Wednesday, March 9th, they will head to Charleston, West Virginia for a 5 pm contest with the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston.
