Box Score EDINBORO, Pennsylvania - As the spring sports season gets into full swing across the nation, the Lake Erie women's lacrosse program took the opportunity to head up I-90 to face off with the Edinboro Fighting Scots. The Storm were finally at full strength, and they showed it with a 8-6 win. This was the Storm's first win of the season, and their first win as a program since 2019. It was also the first win of head coach Meaghan Smith's tenure at Lake Erie.
The Storm have had a tough time scoring early in games this season, and in this contest they seemed to remedy that issue as Cynthia Saxby opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal late in the first quarter. Saxby was not satisfied with that goal as she put a second shot past the Edinboro net minder off a Cassidy Bourne assist early in the second. The contest, however, would favor the Fighting Scots as it entered the half 3-2.
The game really opened up for the Storm in the third quarter. Cassidy Bourne and Erin Snyder would each add 2 goals early in the third to give the Storm control of the game. Edinboro would push back with 2 more of their own, but Bourne would add a third goal to complete her third quarter hat trick to maintain a slight Storm advantage as the game went into the final period. Saxby would then complete her hat trick early in the fourth to push the score up to 8. A final Fighting Scot goal in the waning seconds of the game would not be enough to overcome the Storm's second half surge, and the contest would conclude with a 8-6 score favoring Lake Erie.
Statistically, Lake Erie was led by Cassidy Bourne as she put in a 3 goal and 2 assist effort in her first contest away from the goalkeeper position for the Storm this season. After her, Cynthia Saxby added 3 goals of her own alongside 2 caused turnovers defensively. Shannon Smith would also cause 3 turnovers for the Storm. In goal, Abbot Brandt would earn 6 saves in goal for Lake Erie.
Meaghan Smith and her Storm squad have only begun their work this week as they will get right back at it with a Friday evening contest against future GMAC and current NAIA foe Thomas More. That contest will be played at 5 pm in the friendly confines of Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville, Ohio.
