ST. LOUIS, Missouri - After a successful campaign for the Lake Erie wrestling program, the season reached its conclusion with the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships. The national tournament was held in Chaifetz Arena in Saint Louis, Missouri. The Storm qualified 3 wrestlers for the competition after a strong showing in the West Liberty regional, namely regional champ Corey Gamet at 133, James Penfold at 165, and Tyler Swiderski at 157.
The story of the weekend was Corey Gamet for the Storm as he upset the #1 seeded Tanner Cole from Central Oklahoma in the first round. After the big win in the first round, Gamet proved that win was no fluke as he defeated Devin Flannery of Millersville in the quarter final. This dramatic run would clinch All-American status for Corey Gamet, and a 5th place finish overall.
Unlike his teammate, James Penfold would initially come up short in his first matchup of the competition. However, Penfold would push through the initial setback to defeat Chase Morgan of West Liberty by pin in his first consolation match. He would then defeat Nate Trepanier of Lindenwood. Despite losing his final matchup of the competition, this showing was enough to earn Penfold an 8th place overall finish in the 165 pound weight class, and All-American status alongside his teammate Gamet.
Freshman Tyler Swiderski also competed well for the Storm in the 157 pound weight class. He would fall in both of his matchups at nationals after he earned a surprise bid to the tournament from his strong 3rd place showing at the West Liberty regional.
These championships conclude a successful season for the Lake Erie wrestlers. After coming up a single team point short of winning a GMAC wrestling title, they now have 2 All-American honors to show for this successful campaign for coach Jeff Breese's program.
