WEST LIBERTY, WV - After a successful regular season that saw the Storm come up just short of a G-MAC Wrestling Championship, the Lake Erie wrestling program looked to make their mark in their first postseason opportunity of the year at the NCAA Division II Super Regional III hosted by West Liberty University in West Liberty, West Virginia. The Storm would compete well and would earn a 3rd place team finish overall.
The best showing of the day was Corey Gamet. He went 3-0 in individual bouts, and was the first place finisher amongst all wrestlers at the 133 pound weight class in the competition.
After Gamet, James Penfold had another impressive showing with a 2nd place finish and a 2-1 record on the day. He started off 2-0. However, he picked up an injury in the second bout and was forced to concede the championship bout due to medical forfeit.
Tyler Swiderski would earn a 3rd place position with a 5-1 record on the day. After an early loss, he rallied and won 4 consecutive hardfought bouts to earn the third place spot.
In addition to those 3 performances of note, Jack Haskin finished 4th in the 149 pound weight class. Jordan Rodriguez (125), Christopher Droege (197), John Penfold (174) and Ronnie D'Amico (285) would all earn 5th place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Due to the impressive showing in the Super Regional, the Storm will have a chance to wrestle at the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships to be held in Saint Louis, Missouri on March 11th and 12th.
