Baseball Loses Doubleheader at Ohio Dominican

Box Score

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — On Friday, the Lake Erie College baseball team ventured to Ohio Dominican University to face off with the Panthers. In the first game, Ohio Dominican won, 11-1. And in the second game, the Panthers won as well, this time 9-8. This puts Lake Erie's record at 5-26 for the season, while Ohio Dominican improves to 25-9.

Game 1

In the first game, Ohio Dominican took control of the game early and didn't relinquish it for the duration of the contest. However, the scoring actually began on the Lake Erie side, as right fielder Jacob Lozinski's RBI single put the Storm up 1-0 in the top of the second. But after that, the Panthers went on an 11-0 run the rest of the way, which included two two-run home runs. Starting pitcher Tyler Bryant got the loss, giving up seven earned runs over four innings. Tristan Mayer came in after Bryant, but he didn't fare much better, allowing across an additional four runs before the run rule was put into effect.

For ODU, starting pitcher Scott Rouse got the win in this one, allowing only the one run and four hits in 5.1 IP. Reliever Andrew Deyhle kept things scoreless the rest of the way after that.

Other notable things on the Lake Erie side: Lozinski and Eric Doyle each had a stolen base, and Jesse Barrios went 1-2 with a walk in the game.

Game 2

The Storm were much more competitive in Game 2 of the doubleheader, but it didn't start out that way. Starting pitcher Cade Wendel gave up five runs in the bottom of the second inning, putting the Storm in an early hole. But in the top of the third inning, Lake Erie turned around and put three runs of their own right back on the board, thanks to a three-run home run off the bat of left fielder Luis Vergara-Schoonewolff. He would end up with a total of six RBI in this one, as he would go yard for another three-run blast in the eighth inning. That home run broke the five-all tie, as the Storm had gotten two additional runs in the fourth inning on an error and a sacrifice fly.

However, the three-run lead Vergara-Schoonewolff gave the Storm was short-lived, as the bullpen let in three runs in the bottom of that same inning to put the game at eight-all heading into the ninth. The Storm failed to score in their half of the inning, but in the bottom of the ninth, Panthers designated hitter Andrew Deyhle hit a double with a runner on base. There was an error in the field by the Storm, and that allowed the winning run to score, giving the Panthers the victory in walk-off fashion, 9-8.

For the Storm, lefty Ryan Lally pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Luis Vergara-Schoonewolff, Eric Doyle, Nathan Birtley, and Corbin Paxton each had two hits.

Now these two clubs prepare for a doubleheader rematch tomorrow afternoon.
