Box Score It was a long way coming, but the Lake Erie women's basketball team came back from behind to defeat the Ursuline Arrows in double overtime Saturday, taking their first victory at home on the season by a score of 108-99.
On the Senior Day for forward Breanna Bauer, the Storm started off in a less-than-ideal manner, ending the first quarter down by five and heading into the locker room at halftime down by the same deficit. But despite trailing, the Storm never let the game get away from them. Both sides had 9-0 scoring runs in the first quarter, and individually, the Storm held their own quite well against the Arrows. The aforementioned Bauer led both teams in scoring on her big day, dropping 25 with her parents in attendance. Ursuline's Morgan Mattimore dropped an impressive 24 points off the bench, but Lake Erie topped the Arrows in bench production, receiving 39 points from non-starters compared to Ursuline's 31. Additionally, Lake Erie won the battle concerning points in the paint, second chance points, and fast break points.
But although the Storm put up a great effort, after three quarters, the score was still 69-58. That's when Lake Erie kicked it up a level, cutting Ursuline's lead completely and even briefly taking the lead. With less than two seconds to go in the game and with the score tied, the Arrows nearly sank a game-winning floater as time expired. But that shot did not fall, and the game went into overtime.
Lake Erie came tantalizingly close to victory in the first overtime, but Ursuline shot a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie things up once more and send the affair into a second overtime. This would be the closest the Arrows came to topping the Storm for the rest of the day though. Lake Erie put their foot on the gas for the second OT, and visiting Ursuline simply couldn't get shots to fall that they had been relying on all game, especially the three-point shot. And as the final buzzer sounded, signaling the Storm's first home win of the year, the Lake Erie sideline erupted in celebration. The win elevates the Storm to a record of 3-13, while the tough luck losers of Ursuline fall to 7-11 on the season.
"What an awesome team win for us today!" said Storm head coach Mackenzie Perttu. "We had players step up all throughout the game to make big plays. Abby, Dy, and Shay came off the bench to give us a huge spark. Bree and Lainey were both extremely aggressive on offense and the boards, which was really important for us down the stretch. Both teams made big play after big play, and fought incredibly hard until the end. We are thrilled to come out on top of this one against a big rival."
Next on the schedule for Lake Erie is a home game against Trevecca Nazarene on Monday at 1:00.
