The Lake Erie College wrestling program started off their busy weekend slate with a long road trip up to Saint Cloud State in Minnesota to take on the defending national champion Huskies. The Storm would come up short in the meet by a score of 33-6.
10 Lake Erie wrestlers would make the trip with coach Jeff Breese up to Saint Cloud. Two would come away with individual wins. Defending GMAC wrestler of the week James Penfold would come up with a win in the 165-pound weight class. In the heavyweight division, Ronnie D'Amico would come away with a win as well.
For the rest of the Storm wrestlers, there were still some bright spots. Freshman Jack Haskin made the most of his collegiate debut by narrowly falling to an All-American opponent from the Huskies. Additionally, Corey Gamet and Christopher Droege would also both come up short in hard-fought and tightly contested bouts against some of the best opposition in the country.
Coach Breese's Insights on Today's Contest
"I think we competed better than the score may indicate. This was a tough challenge for the team to face a considerable amount of travel to take on Saint Cloud in a tough environment. We responded and competed the right way. We missed some opportunities, but it was certainly not for lack of battle. We can fix our game plans and execution. We can't force belief, and our team had the belief to compete with the best in the country."
The rest of the Storm wrestlers who did not make the Minnesota trip will head up the road tomorrow, Sunday, November 21st for another contest with John Carroll kicking off at 11 am.
