(OWENSBORO, Ky.) - Lake Erie wrestling proved to be deep in every weight class as they competed in the 2021 Great Midwest Championships on Saturday in Owensboro, Ky.
The Storm as a team finished in third with 73.5 points. No.9 Ashland took home the hardware with 115 points followed by second-place Tiffin with 75.5 team points.
Individually, Corey Gamet, Zane Johnson, and Brandon Tenney each advanced to the final rounds.
In the 125 weight class, Gamet a redshirt freshman defeated Adam Bender of host team Kentucky Wesleyan in the quarter-finals 15-4. Gamet then followed up with a 7-0 decision in the semifinals over Findlay's Zachary Collins. In the finals, Gamet secured first place with a 13-4 major decision over Christian Wellman of Ashland.
Senior, Zane Johnson an experienced wrestler for the Storm won all three of his matches in the 133 weight class and finished the day with a 5-3 decision over Bryce Allison (Tiffin).
In a tough 149 weight class, Tenney placed second after dropping his final match of the day to Carson Speelman (Ashland) in a 6-4 decision.
Jacob Donahue, Nick Burgard, John Penfold, and Christopher Droege each finished in third place after dropping their semifinal matches. The top 3 wrestlers in each weight class were awarded All-American honors.
The Storm will have a few days off before having a chance to compete again as they host a tri-match against Indianapolis and Davenport on Saturday, Jan 30.
