PAINESVILLE, Ohio
The Lake Erie College Storm wrestling program fell to the Rangers of University of Wisconsin- Parkside tonight with a final score of 22-16.
The Storm fell behind early but came back, going into the heavyweight match with the opportunity to finish the dual with 19 points to each team.
University of Wisconsin- Parkside took matches at 125 (Jacob Johnson), 133 (Blake Glogouski), and 141 (Andrew Lieb), and went up 13-0 over the Storm.
The Storm then won three straight matches at 149, 157, and 165. At 149, Brandon Tenney earned the first individual win of the night. Tenney earned a 9-3 decision over Nathan Hensley to cut the Ranger lead to 10 points.
At 157, Jacob Potok earned a 4-1 decision win to add three points to the Storm cause, making the score 13-6.
Freshman James Penfold took down no. 12 overall Shane Gantz with six seconds left in the third period, putting the Storm within one point of the Rangers.
The Storm dropped back-to-back matches at 174 and 184, giving the Rangers a seven point margin heading into the last two matches of the dual.
Redshirt junior and no. 12 overall ranked wrestler at 197, Chris Droege, earned a major decision win (16-2) to give the Storm four points, and cut the Ranger lead back down to three points heading into the heavyweight match.
Wrestling at heavyweight for the Storm was Devn Uzelac. Uzelac had almost 4.2 seconds of riding time and was down 2-1 going into the sixth overtime period, but the decision for the heavyweight match resulted in a riding time advantage of .49 seconds for UW-Parkside.
The Storm will host Gannon University on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. for senior night and their second-annual Dinner & A Show event.
