Baseball Drops Pair to Malone

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(MASSILLON, Ohio) – Lake Erie fell in a pair of games against Malone by scores of 3-2 and 12-4 Monday afternoon at Jackson High School. The Storm dropped to 11-13 overall and 5-7 within the G-MAC, while the Pioneers moved up to 20-10 overall and 10-4 in the league.

The Green and White were close to victory in the opener as they carried a 2-1 lead into the final frame before Malone scored two for a walk-off win. Nigel Williams provided the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth with a solo shot to center to make it 2-1. Both teams each scored a run in the first with the Storm's run resulting from a single by Nathan Erzen to score Nathan Birtley.

Starter Evan Layne pitched a gem through the first six innings as he struck out 11. He allowed the one run on four hits and two walks.

The bookend of the series saw the Storm take an early 2-0 lead before the hosts scored nine-straight to take control of the game. Caleb Waller and Rees Rua both launched home runs down the right field line in the first and second inning, respectively.

After the Pioneers took a 9-2 lead, Erzen put Lake Erie back on the board as he hit in Waller. Corbin Paxton singled in Trace Peterson in the next inning, but it wasn't enough as the hosts scored three more runs down the stretch.

The Storm will be back in action tomorrow in a single game against No. 21 Wayne State. First pitch is at 5 p.m. at Classic Park.
