Northern Michigan Wins Close Battle Against Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Northern Michigan University, 45-38.

The first quarter started as a defensive battle, and the Storm was trailing 5-4 at the media timeout.  The Storm ended the first quarter on a 6-0 run, that was highlighted by Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) as she hit a jumper at the buzzer.  The Storm entered the second quarter leading 12-7, behind strong defensive play as the Storm had seven steals in the quarter.    

The Wildcats opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and took a 16-12 advantage, the run was ended when Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a runner in the lane, with just under five minutes remaining in the half.  After the media timeout the Wildcats continued to ride their early second quarter momentum and took a 21-14 lead into the half.  The Storm was led by Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) as she had six points and two steals in the half.     

The third quarter opened as a back and forth battle in which the Storm was unable to cut into the lead, and the Wildcat entered the media timeout leading, 29-18.  Both teams continued to trade baskets and the Storm entered the fourth quarter trailing, 36-27.    

The Storm continued to battle and cut the Wildcat lead to 39-32, when Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup off of an assist by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor).  The Storm fought for the remainder of the game, but were unable to complete the comeback, and fell 45-38.     

The Storm was led by Jones as she had nine points, seven rebounds, and two steals. Skelton had a team high 10 points in the game.  Dawson, Gabor, and Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) each had three steals in the game.    

Lake Erie will be back in action Thursday (January 14th) when they host Malone University at 5:30 P.M.
