Late Charge Elevates Hillsdale Over Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Hillsdale College, 63-53.  With the loss the Storm falls to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference, and with the win the Chargers improve to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. 

The Chargers jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Carlye Garst (Salem, Va. / Salem) hit a three to cut the lead to 5-3 to get the Storm rolling in the first quarter.  The Storm battled back to tie the game at 7-7 before Hillsdale took a 13-9 lead into the media timeout.  Both teams battled for the remainder of the quarter and the Chargers led, 19-14 entering the second quarter. 

The second quarter started with both teams trading baskets, and Hillsdale led 28-24 at the media timeout.  Neither team was able to muster any momentum, and the Chargers entered the intermission with a 32-28 advantage.  At the half the Storm was led by Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) she had nine points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc.     

The third quarter was a defensive battle in which the Chargers maintained their advantage, and led 40-33 at the media timeout.  The Storm ended the third quarter on a 12-5 run that was highlighted by a pair of Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) three pointers, and the Storm enter the fourth quarter trailing 45-43. 

Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup to tie the game at 45 points apiece, before the Chargers went on a 5-0 run to take a 50-45 advantage.   The Storm cut the Chargers lead to 52-49 at the media timeout.  The Storm came out the media timeout and went a 4-0 run that gave them a 53-52 lead.  The Chargers responded with a 9-0 run and took a 61-53 advantage, which forced a Storm timeout.  Hillsdale held on to win, 63-53.      

Gabor led the way for the Storm with 17 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks.  Narducci pitched in with 11 points, and a team high three assists.  Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) led the Storm defense with five steals.

Lake Erie will be back in action on Wednesday (December 16th) when they travel to take on Division-I Youngstown St. University at 11 A.M.
