Box Score DETROIT, MICH. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team hit the road for the first time this season on Sunday (Dec. 9), but Wayne State University proved to be a rude host in sending the Storm to their third straight loss, 51-48, at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.
The Storm (2-4, 0-3 GLIAC) trailed by 10 with just over six minutes to go, but cut the deficit to three in the closing seconds. After Kristen Long missed a pair of free throws with three seconds left, Lake Erie had a shot to tie but a desperation three-pointer by junior Chrissy Delaney (Delaware, Ohio/Lewis Center Olentangy) was off the mark.
Wayne State (3-3, 3-1 GLIAC) never trailed in the game, but was also never able to fully put away the Storm until the final buzzer. Lake Erie outshot the Warriors, 24.8% (16-of-46) to 29.8 (14-of-47) and forced 24 turnovers. Wayne State, however, went 23-of-33 from the foul line and outrebounded the Storm 51-26.
Lake Erie was just 15-of-27 (55.6%) at the free throw line.
Senior Ashar Harris (Columbus, Ohio/Africentric/Morehead State) had another double-double – her sixth straight – and led the Storm with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She was the only Lake Erie player in double figures. Senior Sarah Wojciechowski (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) and redshirt junior Chloe Irish (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) each scored seven points off the Storm bench.
Talisha Bridges scored 19 points to lead the Warriors. Phaebre Colbert had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Kayla Bridges grabbed 11 boards as well.
The two teams combined to go just one-of-17 from three-point range.
The Storm will be off for a full week before hosting Lake Superior State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game on Monday night, Dec. 17.
