Box Score PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Despite putting five players in double
figures, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team had its
school-record nine-game winning streak snapped this afternoon (Feb.
13) in overtime at Ohio Dominican University, 89-87.
Senior guard Renese Ames
(Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) scored a season-high 23 points for
the Storm (17-9), which lost for the first time since Dec.
28.
When the two teams met on Jan. 30, Lake Erie dominated the
contest throughout, exiting with an 84-53 victory in
Painesville. This time, in Columbus, neither team seemed to
hold the upper hand for very long.
The Storm trailed by 10 late in the first half but closed the
period with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 34-34. Lake Erie
then opened the second half with a 9-0 spurt to take its largest
lead of the game.
The lead was eight with 11 minutes left in regulation before the
Panthers responded with a 10-2 run to knot the score at
60. Later, the Panthers scored six straight points to go up
70-64 with 4:06 to go. After Lake Erie rallied to tie it
again, a three-point play by Summer Hale put ODU ahead 79-76 with a
minute left. But sophomore guard Britt
Busson's (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) three-pointer
tied the game at 79-79, sending the game into overtime.
The Panthers never trailed in the extra period and had a
four-point lead with 50 seconds to go. A lay-up by junior
Alyssa
Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) cut the deficit
in half and after a defensive stop, the Storm had a chance to win
it but junior Katelyn
Prince's (Thompson, Ohio/Ledgemont) three-pointer
missed at the buzzer.
Wagers finished with 12 points and Busson added
11. Sophomore Stephanie
Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) scored 16 points and
grabbed a team-high seven rebounds before fouling
out. Classmate Jen Caiola
(Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) had 13 points, despite
hitting just four-of-18 shots (3-of-13 three-pointers).
As a team, the Storm struggled from the field, shooting just
39.2 percent (29-of-74) overall, including just nine-of-30 (30%)
from beyond the arc. Lake Erie is just 1-8 this season when
shooting below 40%.
Hale led all players with 30 points and 15 rebounds. She
was just nine-of-21 from the field, but hit 12-of-18 from the foul
line. Kirsten Ruen scored 23, hitting four three's, and Tracy
Snider had 17 off the bench for the Panthers.
ODU shot 42.9% (27-of-63) in the game and outrebounded the Storm
47-42.
Lake Erie will look to rebound and close out the regular season
with a road victory next Saturday, Feb. 20, at Urbana
University.
