Box Score PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Behind the first career double-double by
senior guard Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford)
the Lake Erie College women's basketball overcame a dismal shooting
day to knock off previously unbeaten Concord University 53-46 in
the first game of the Fairmont State Alumni Classic in Fairmont, W.
Va.
Ames scored 11 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds off
the bench to spark the Storm (10-8) to its second straight
win. Sophomore post Stephanie Rogers (Mentor,
Ohio/Mentor) led Lake Erie with 12 points , grabbed nine
rebounds and blocked four shots while junior forward Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) scored nine points
and hauled down a game-high 12 boards.
As a team, the Storm had a 52-45 edge on the glass. That,
as well as a plus-15 edge from the foul line, helped offset a
season-low 23 percent shooting from the field (14-of-61), including
just three-of-18 from three-point range. "
You're not supposed to win when you shoot 23 percent," said head
coach Bob Booher. "But we played really strong defense today.
And when you hold the other team to under 30 percent shooting and
hit your free throws when they put you on the line, good things can
happen."
Lake Erie led by eight early, but a 9-0 Concord (6-1) run late
in the half made it a one-point Storm lead at halftime
(24-23). It was a four-point lead midway through the
second half before a Rogers jumper and four straight free
throws by Ames provided the Storm with some breathing room.
The lead grew as big as 13 points with 2:40 to go. The
Mountain Lions got within seven before sophomore guard Jen Caiola (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) sank two free
tosses and Ames added another to push the margin back to double
digits.
Ames finished seven-of-eight from the line to make up for a
two-of-17 shooting performance. As a team, Lake Erie was
22-of-29 from the charity stripe, going 17-of-20 from the line in
the second half. Caiola added eight points and eight
rebounds.
Concord was led by Sierra Brown's 14 points. The Lions
shot just 28% (18-64) in the game, going just three-of-20 from
beyond the arc. They were just seven-of-10 from the foul
line.
Lake Erie, which reached the 10-win mark for the third time in
the last four seasons, will play host Fairmont State on
Sunday, Jan. 3, at 3 p.m.
