Box Score PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- Four players reached double figures,
including a pair with double-doubles, as the Lake Erie College
women's basketball team broke out of its two-game slump with a
77-65 home win over Notre Dame College on Monday night (Dec.
21).
Junior Alyssa Wagers (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) led the way
for the Storm (8-6) with a career-high 22 points and10 rebounds for
her third double-double in the last four games. It was her sixth
double-double of the season and 19th of her career.
Sophomore Stephanie Rogers (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) also had a
double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go
along with a career-high six blocks. Sophomore Jen Caiola (Chagrin
Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) broke out of her two-game shooting slump
with 19 points, hitting five of the team?s six three-pointers.
Lake Erie never trailed in the game, winning the tip and taking
a 2-0 lead three seconds into the contest. The Storm, which shot
just 30 percent in its last two games combined, hit eight of its
first 12 shots and took a 10-point lead, 26-16, at the midway point
of the half on a Caiola three.
Caiola's third three of the half put the Storm up 12, 37-25, at
the break.
After cooling towards the end of the first half, Lake Erie
opened the second red hot, hitting six-of-seven to start the period
and extend the lead to as many as 16 at 46-30 with 17 minutes to
go.
Notre Dame (6-4) crept within eight points with 10:10 to go on a
three-pointer by Kealy McNally. But the Storm responded with a 10-0
run, capped by another bomb from Caiola, to put the game away.
Senior guard Renese Ames (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford) was the fourth
Storm player in double figures with 10 points off the bench. Lake
Erie finished the game 30-of-65 (46.2 percent) and held the Falcons
to just 31.8% (21-of-66). The Storm finished with a season-high 10
blocked shots.
Wagers, who went over the 600-point mark for her career (she now
has 608), tied her career-high with the 22 points. She also scored
that many against Frostburg State on Jan. 21, 2008.
Chelsea Andorka was the only Falcon in double digits, scoring 18
off the bench for Notre Dame. Despite the double-doubles by Wagers
and Rogers, the Falcons held a slight 43-41 edge in rebounding on
the game.
The win by Lake Erie ended a seven-game series losing streak to
the Falcons, as the Storm notched its first series win since Feb.
4, 1997. The two teams had not met since the 2002-03 season.
The Storm will take the short trip west on Wednesday, Dec. 23,
to face Division I Cleveland State University at the Wolstein
Center. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
