Two Walk-Off Wins Propel Lake Erie to Series Split With Cedarville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Storm split their first four-game series of the season when they traveled down to Cedarville, Ohio. Although the game was located at the Yellow Jacket's field, it was a home series for Lake Erie due to scheduling conflicts.

Game 1 - April 29

The Yellow Jackets and Storm each came out swinging in the first inning, putting up two runs each early.

From there, the Storm would struggle on the mound and fail to put the ball in play with runners on base.

Lake Erie pitchers would surrender eight walks on the day while the offense would strike out 12 times.

Cody Greenfield and Jean Valentin would each drive in a run in the bottom of the eighth but the Storm would end up falling, 6-4.

WP: Noah Cline (4-5)

LP: Anthony Berrios Jr. (1-6)

SV: Reid Hale (6)

Game 2 - April 29

Storm pitchers were not able to stifle the Yellow Jackets in game 2 on the day as they gave up two runs in the top of the first and then six more in the second, giving Cedarville a quick 8-0 cushion to play with.

Lake Erie would put together six runs over seven innings with Mason Eicher going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

By the end of seven, the Storm would suffer a 15-6 loss and looked to even the series the next day.

WP: Kevin Zhang (2-1)

LP: Jay Gural (1-3)

Game 3 - April 30

Lake Erie would put together one of their finest pitching performances of the year in game three of the four-game series. On a day their offense struggled, Alvin Resner IV would keep the Storm in the game, going a complete seven innings while allowing six hits and striking out three. Despite allowing five walks, Resner would remain poised on the mound and only allow one runner to cross home the entire game.

Both teams would get their first runs in the fifth inning, with the Storm's run coming on a Cody Balliet double to right-center, bringing home Graham Solak to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mason Eicher would lead off with a walk and advance on a wild pitch. Nick Taylor would draw a walk the next at-bat, causing Cedarville to switch their pitcher with no outs and two runners on.

With a 2-2 count, Graham Solak would deliver and drive home Eicher to walk it off for Lake Erie.

Solak would go 2-for-4 on the day while Balliet would finish 2-for-3.

WP: Alvin Resner IV (2-5)

LP: Reid Hale (1-5)

Game 4 - April 30

Riding off the high from their walk-off win, the Storm would look to keep the momentum going in the final match of the series.

Cedarville would swing the momentum back in their direction, however, scoring four runs in the first two innings.

Lake Erie would march right back though in the bottom of the second and score four of their own, capped off by a two-run single by game 3 hero, Graham Solak.

Solak would give the Storm the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a single. A throwing error on the play would bring home one more run and Zach Saffell knock in the third run of the inning with an RBI single which scored Solak and gave Lake Erie a 7-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth with the Storm up 8-6, Nick Taylor would be called upon to close out the game. Unfortunately, he would give up two runs and leave the game tied heading into the bottom of the inning.

Lake Erie would not be able to score so the game would head to extra innings. Taylor would redeem himself though and throw four hitless innings, keeping them in the game.

In the bottom of the 13th, Mason Eicher would again reach base with a one-out double to left-center. With him at second, Taylor would come up to bat with the chance to be the hero with his bat. He would end up delivering by driving the first pitch he saw into left field, scoring Eicher, and giving the Storm a 9-8 lead and their second walk-off victory of the day!

WP: Nick Taylor (1-0)

LP: Bryce Hughes (1-1)

The Storm will be back in action Tuesday, May 1 for a one, nine-inning game against Gannon on the road before finishing up their season with a four-game set in Canton against Walsh on May 6-7.
