Box Score 4 ASHLAND, Ohio - As the winter weather of Northeast Ohio finally warms up, the Lake Erie baseball team was slated for a weekend series with the Ashland Eagles. In four games in Ashland across Saturday and Sunday, the Storm had some good individual performances, but they were unable to come up with a win as they were swept by the Eagles. The games went as follows:
Ashland 16, Lake Erie 5
In the first contest on Saturday, Ashland quickly took control of the game as they scored 12 of the 16 runs in the first three innings. Lake Erie would get back in the game in the fourth inning when a Mark Ross single would open up the scoring by bringing in Cody Balliet around from third. Lake Erie would add 2 more in that inning, and 2 more in the 5th. However, it was not enough to overcome the Eagles' advantage, and Ashland took game 1.
Ashland 6, Lake Erie 2
In the second contest on Saturday, Lake Erie put together their most complete game of the series. The Lake Erie runs would come from a Cody Balliet single in the first inning that brought in Mark Ross. Israel Espinosa would then steal third and advance to home on an Ashland throwing error. Despite the great start for the Storm, Ashland would rattle off 6 runs unanswered and take game 2.
Ashland 9, Lake Erie 0
With a fresh start on Sunday, the Storm looked to find their groove offensively. However, this was not the game for that. Lake Erie would put up just three hits on the day, including an Israel Espinosa double. Connor Shimek and Mark Ross would each add base hits, and Robert Helt would have a decent day on the bump. Unfortunately, it was not quite enough to make the difference as the Eagles took game 3.
Ashland 13, Lake Erie 5
In the final contest of the weekend, the Storm had their most productive game at the plate. After Ashland took an initial lead, Rece Sabo would drive in a run off of a single to left field in the fourth. In the seventh, Josue Cruz would also drive in a run off of a base hit. The 8th inning is when the game really opened up for the Storm as Cruz and Connor Shimek would both double. Unfortunately, the 5 runs were not enough for the Storm to rally back into the game and Ashland would pull away with the win to complete the sweep.
Despite the Ashland sweep, the Storm's baseball season is far from over. They will get a chance to get some revenge against the Mercyhurst Lakers as they dropped two games to them earlier this season. They will head up to Erie, Pennsylvania for a 2 pm contest on Tuesday, April 5th.
