Storm Drop Four-Game Series in Hillsdale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Erie College Storm Baseball team traveled to face the Hillsdale College Chargers this weekend for a four-game series that was originally scheduled to be in Eastlake, Ohio. The Storm were the home team in this series however and were swept in the contest. With the conclusion of this series, their record now falls to 3-28 on the season.

Game 1 - April 15

The Storm got off to a rough start in the series, surrendering five runs in the top of the first inning. Despite the early deficit, the Lake Erie offense would not be discouraged so easily. In the bottom of the first, a Mark Ross single and Israel Espinosa double would lead to Graham Solak driving in a run with an RBI groundout, and the next at-bat, Robert Helt would knock in two more with a home run to right field to cut the deficit to 5-3 at the end of the first.

Storm pitching would hold on to shutout the Chargers over the next two innings but would give up 11 total in the next three. Lake Erie would manage to put three more runs on the board in the game but would ultimately lose, 16-6.

WP: Drew Olssen (1-1)

LP: Anthony Berrios Jr. (1-4)

Game 2 - April 15/16

With Game 1 under their belts, Lake Erie would look to end the day with a win. Starter Jay Gural would give up two runs in the top of the first but quickly settle down and pitch two scoreless frames after.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Storm would put together two runs, including an RBI double by Mason Eicher that would put them on top 3-2. Unfortunately, the lead would not last long as Lake Erie ran into a tough fifth inning in which they gave up six more runs, making the deficit 8-3.

The Storm would not go away though as they chipped together two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-5.

That would ultimately be all they had in the tank, however, as the final score would end up being 10-5 Hillsdale.

WP: Paul Brophy (2-5)

LP: Jay Gural (1-2)

Game 3 - April 16

Lake Erie would arguably put together their best pitching performance of the series during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Despite falling down early in the first again, the pitching would settle down and deliver a few solid frames to allow the offense to catch up.

The Storm offense would not be able to come back however and the Chargers would walk away with a 7-0 victory to start the day.

WP: Will Gifford (5-3)

LP: Robert Helt (0-6)

Game 4 - April 16

Game 4 would be a battle of the bats in Hillsdale with the Storm being the first ones to score in the contest. Lake Erie would advance on a passed ball in the first to be the first ones to strike. In the second, the offense would explode.

A Cody Greenfield double would score the first run and three batters later, Graham Solak would smack a grand slam to center field and extend the lead to 6-0.

Hillsdale would respond accordingly in the top of the third with five runs of their own and a two-run double by Mason Eicher in the bottom half of the inning would stretch the lead out to 8-5.

The Chargers would have another huge inning in the top of the fifth, putting up six runs and taking their first lead in the game with an 11-9 score.

Hillsdale would continue to score over the next three innings and it wasn't until the bottom of the eighth when the Storm would get score again. The Hillsdale offense would prove to be too much though and Lake Erie would drop the final game, 19-12.

WP: Brendan Pochmara (1-1)

LP: Alvin Resner IV (0-5)

The Storm will be back in action Tuesday, April 19 for their first series of the year at Classic Park against UIndy for a two-game set.
