Storm Lose Two Extra-Inning Contests; Get Swept By the Falcons on the Road

Box Score

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio- The Lake Erie College Storm Baseball team traveled to face the Notre Dame Falcons this weekend with a three-game series. The Storm were shut out on the weekend, dropping their record on the early season to 1-5.

Game 1 - March 4

Friday, March 4 was marked for the Storm by strong starting pitching. It was Anthony Berrios Jr. who got the nod in the first game, pitching a gem of a game by shutting out the Falcons through six innings of work, walking only two, and striking out 10 batters.

The game as a whole was a pitcher's duel as both teams only combined for nine hits.

The Storm got on the board first in the second inning when Treyvon Fletcher smacked a two-run single. The next inning, Lake Erie tacked on another run when Cody Greenfield was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The score would remain 3-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning when Nick Taylor would come in to relieve Berrios and surrender three runs to take the game into extra innings.

The Falcons would notch a run in the bottom of the eighth and walk it off, leaving the final score at 4-3.

Game 2 - March 4

The second game of the Friday doubleheader was another tight contest through the end. Jon Poppy pitched seven solid innings, surrendering seven hits, four runs and two earned runs, while walking just two and striking out eight.

The Falcons would strike first, scoring a run each in the first and second inning, creating an early 2-0 lead. The Storm would tie it right back up though in the top of the third with a Treyvon Fletcher RBI single and a Graham Solak solo home run.

Notre Dame would bounce right back though in the bottom of the inning but Lake Erie would tie it up again in the top of the fourth.

The game would remain tied and go into extra innings again, but the Storm would not be able to hold on and would end up losing the contest on a walk-off grand slam.

Game 3 - March 5

The final match of the series kicked off with the Falcons continuing where they left off the previous night. They would put up a 3-0 lead after three but the Storm would finally get to their starting pitcher, rallying in the top of the fifth and taking a 4-3 lead by putting together hits and walks and a Zac Pokorny solo shot to kick off the scoring.

That would be it for the Lake Erie offense, however, as the bats remained quiet and the Flacons regained the lead in the seventh, ending the contest with a final score of 5-4.

The Storm will be back in action March 12-13 as they travel to Mercy Health Stadium to take on the University of Indianapolis for a four-game series.
