Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College Storm men's basketball team fell in their home opener to the Wayne State Warriors, 74-73 on November 17 in what was a very exciting match until the final seconds.
The Storm played a tight back-and-forth contest to start out the game and managed to take a five-point lead at one point. About halfway through the first half, the Warriors would take control, taking a lead and holding that until for the rest of the half and halfway through the second half as well. Lake Erie would refuse to let them take more than a ….point lead as they kept them in their sights and forced Wayne State to play tough basketball.
With the game coming down to a close and down by five, the Storm would put together a couple of good possessions and tie things up 70-70 with a clutch three-point shot by P.J. Jones.
Jonny Manning would wreak havoc on the Warriors' defense, blocking two of their shots in the final minutes to keep the game tied. Wayne Stae would manage to score back-to-back baskets and take a four-point lead but with 30 seconds remaining, Jordan Burton would knock down a clutch three to put Lake Erie within one. A turnover by the Warriors would lead to Jordan Burton driving in the lane with second remaining but he would miss the floater and give the ball back to Wayne State. They would subsequently get fouled but miss the free throw with the Storm controlling the ball. I fatal error on the inbounds pass would force the Storm to turn the ball over and that would kill the hope for Lake Erie.
The Storm were led by Jacob Plantz who recorded 16 points and shot 6-10 from the field with a 2-5 shooting night from beyond the arc.
Wayne State would just simply outshoot the Storm from three-point range, posting a 42.9% percentage compared to the Storm's 24%. Lake Erie would manage to impress in the paint, however, outrebounding Wayne State 40-26.
The Storm now start the season at 0-2 and will continue action on the road as they take on Salem (WV) on November 19 at 4:00 PM.
