Box Score (COLUMBUS, Ohio) — On Saturday afternoon, the Lake Erie College baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader at Ohio Dominican. The Panthers won the first game, 3-1, and the second game, 15-4. This puts the Storm's record at 5-28 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 27-9.
Game 1
In the first game, the Panthers bats weren't overly hot, but they were able to jump at opportunities to score when they presented themselves, and they got the win because of it. Lake Erie starting pitcher Ryan Middendorf was good in this one, giving up only two earned runs over six innings pitched, striking out nine. The first Panthers run came in the second inning, on an error in the field. Then two more came in the third inning.
The Storm would grab a run in the top of the sixth, on a Corbin Paxton sacrifice fly, but that would be all the scoring the Lake Erie offense would get in the first game, as ODU pitchers Brendan Hofacre and Derek Bolander combined to keep the Storm to only one run on three hits (Bolander actually put up all zeros in his 1.1 innings pitched the close out the game, earning him the save; Hofacre got the win).
Game 2
The Panthers asserted their dominance much more in the second game, demonstrating their endurance and ability to put together quality pitching and offense in both games of the doubleheader. However, it was the Storm who started off as the stronger team in this one, as they scored the first four runs of the game. This was propelled by a two-run home run to left center by Luis Vergara-Schoonewolff in the first inning, which came after an RBI double by Trace Peterson had already put the Storm up earlier in the inning. Then in the second inning, Drew Donaldson's RBI groundout gave the Storm their fourth run and put ODU starter Clay Davies on the ropes.
But after that, starting in the bottom of the second inning, it was all Ohio Dominican in this one. the Panthers batters got on starter Chris Mutter, as well as relievers Chase Tompkins and Tristan Mayer. Those three Storm pitchers combined to allow 15 total runs, although only 12 were earned. This included two home runs, to Thomas Staab and Zac Wilson. Tyler Bryant pitched a flawless last 1.2 innings for Lake Erie, but the damage had already been done, and the Storm fell.
Now Lake Erie prepares for its final series of the season, at home against Ohio Valley on Saturday and Sunday.
