Box Score 2 (Canton, Ohio) – The Lake Erie Storm softball team split the day with the Malone Pioneers. The Storm took game one with a final score of 6-5 in nine innings, before losing game two 10-6.
Game One
Grace Hammer recorded a win today for the Storm today striking out nine, giving up only five runs.
The Storm was scoreless the first three innings of game one. Kiya Smith started the fourth inning with a single to right-center. Jesse Carpenter followed with yet another single to right-center, advancing Smith to second. Morgan Smith came up big for the Storm as she doubled to left-center, scoring both Carpenter and Kiya Smith.
Dani Soria started the fifth inning with a triple down the right-field line. Jaime Carpenter followed reaching on a fielder's choice, advancing to second on the throw. Payton Brownlee followed with a double to center field scoring both Carpenter and Soria, putting the Storm up 4-1.
The sixth inning was scoreless for both teams. Payton Brownlee started the seventh inning with a single through the left side. Allen grounded out to third base, advancing Brownlee to second. Kiya Smith singled to left field, which scored Brownlee, putting the Storm up 5-1. The Pioneers had a strong seventh inning scoring four runs to tie the Storm 5-5.
The game went into extra innings, with neither team scoring in the eighth. Chloe Allen started the ninth inning with a single through the right side. Doubling to right-center, Kiya Smith scored Allen, putting the Storm up 6-5. The Pioneers came up empty-handed in the ninth inning, as the Storm took the 6-5 win.
Game Two
Jaime Carpenter started game two with a single up the middle. Brownlee followed with another single up the middle, advancing Carpenter to second. Allen followed grounding out to second, advancing Brownlee to second and Carpenter to third. Kiya Smith drove in Brownlee and Carpenter with a 2 RBI single to left field putting the 2-0. The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the first making the score 2-2.
Parker Viele started the second inning with a single through the right side. Soria followed with a single to the pitcher, advancing Viele to second. Jaime Carpenter laid a SAC bunt down, as she was out from by the pitcher to the second baseman. Carpenter advanced Soria to second and Viele to third with her SAC. Brownlee got on by a walk, loading the bases for Allen. Allen singled to center field, scoring both Soria and Viele, advancing Brownlee to third. Kiya Smith followed with a single to right field, advancing to second on the throw. Allen advanced to third on the hit, scoring on a throwing error by the third baseman, while Brownlee scored putting the Storm up 6-2.
The Pioneers stole the momentum from the Storm scoring another eight runs over the next five innings, as the Storm stayed at six. The final score of game two was 10-6 Malone.
Carly Rowland took the loss for the Storm in game two. Rowland recorded 3.1 innings pitched with two strikeouts. Bridget Mullholand came in recording 2.2 innings pitched with two strikeouts as well.
Next Up
The Storm will be back in action Tuesday, April 20th as they travel to Tiffin University. The doubleheader is set to begin with game one at 2 p.m. followed by game two at 4 p.m.
