Baseball Bested by Gannon, 4-2

Box Score

On a cool Monday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania, Gannon University baseball team defeated Lake Erie College, 4-2. The victory propelled the Golden Knights to a 2-1 record on the young season, while the loss dropped the Storm to a record of 1-3.

The main story in this one came in the form of one side simply being able to capitalize on opportunities a little bit better than the other. Both teams began the game pitching scoreless first innings before allowing two runs each in the second inning. But what made the differrence was what happened in the seven innings after that. Each team's starting pitcher ended up lasting 6.0 innings, with Gannon's Jacob Visha allowing two hits, two walks, and two runs over that period, striking out six in the process. Meanwhile, Lake Erie's senior right hander Ryan Middendorf 10 hits, no walks, and four runs over that same stretch, striking out seven.

But the event that would ultimately give Visha the win and leave Middendorf with the loss came in the fifth inning, when Golden Knights right fielder Brandon Wetherholt sent a two-run home run over the outfield fence at Gannon's McConnell Family Stadium.

Aside from the two runs that the Storm got in the second inning on a Reed Collins home run to left field, Lake Erie's bats were mostly held in check all afternoon. Gannon reliever Benjamin Visnesky only gave up one hit over his entire outing, which covered the final three innings of the game and earned him a save. Storm pitcher Ryan Lally pitched two innings of scoreless relief of his own.

Gannon's offensive players of the game were Wetherholt, who picked up four hits and two RBI, including the home run, as well as infielder Kieran Gagnon, who went 3-4 with a double and a triple. For Lake Erie, in addition to Collins, right fielder Eddie Morris also reached base twice on two walks.

The Storm turn right back around and play a makeup doubleheader Tuesday at Notre Dame College. Those affairs are currently slated to begin at 12 and 2 p.m.
