Box Score (FINDLAY, Ohio) — It was an absolutely spectacular display of hitting prowess on display Saturday in Game 2 of the Lake Erie vs. Findlay baseball doubleheader, as the Storm offense erupted in a 27-9 blowout.
From the very beginning, it was starkly evident that the story would be much different in this one than it was in Game 1 of the twin bill between these two teams earlier Saturday, in which Findlay won 5-4 on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the ninth inning. In the second game of the day, the Lake Erie bats were on fire early and often. Being the second game of a doubleheader, only seven innings were played. And the Storm scored in each and every one of them.
Here's how it all breaks down:
First Inning
Paxton RBI double; Vergara-Schoonewolff RBI single
Second Inning
Doyle RBI single; Paxton RBI single; third runner scored on an error
Third Inning
Vergara-Schoonewolff scored on error; Donaldson hit-by-pitch with bases loaded
Fourth Inning
Barrios RBI single; Morris two-RBI single; Donaldson hit-by-pitch with bases loaded (the second time in as many innings!); Birtley scores on infield fly; Browning grand slam; Barrios 2-run home run
Fifth Inning
Peterson solo home run; Barrios sacrifice fly; Morris sacrifice fly
Sixth Inning
Collins solo home run
Seventh Inning
Collins two-run home run; Paxton RBI double; Vergara-Schoonewolff two-RBI double
In total, eleven different Storm batters got hits in the game, and seven got multiple hits. Additionally, three players registered an impressive four RBI each: Sam Browning, Jesse Barrios, and Eddie Morris. Eight different pitchers were used by Findlay.
Of course, Findlay did grab nine runs of their own on 10 hits off of Lake Erie pitchers Ryan Middendorf and Ryan Lally, who combined to pitch the seven innings for the Storm. And that would have been quite a feat, had the opposing side not had 26 hits themselves. But unfortunately for the Oilers, that didn't even scratch the surface of what the Storm were able to do in this one.
Now these two teams will have to recover from a barnburner of a game and long day Saturday to play two more on Sunday. Those games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. EST.
