Box Score (FINDLAY, Ohio) — In the first of a pair of baseball games between the two teams on Saturday afternoon, Lake Erie College lost to Findlay, 5-4, on a walk-off passed ball in the bottom of the ninth. The loss puts the Storm's record at 2-10 on the season, while Findlay improves to 7-9.
Surprisingly, with nine runs scored in the game, the offensive output wasn't huge for either team in this one. Each side only picked up six hits apiece; however, they both found ways to put runs across the plate using unusual methods.
The scoring began with Lake Erie in the top of the second, when infielder Eric Doyle's sacrifice bunt got the Storm their first run. Findlay would tie things up in the third, when center fielder Eric St. Clair got an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center.
The fifth inning saw each side get another run each. First, Drew Donaldson's sacrifice bunt attempt saw the Oilers make an error on the play, and a Lake Erie runner came in to score. Then in the bottom of the inning, Findlay right fielder Ryan O'Malley scored on a fielder's choice.
The Storm put two more runs on the board in the top of the eighth, as third baseman Jesse Barrios hit an RBI double to left center, before Eric Doyle walked with the bases loaded to plate another runner. And that's where the score would stay until the bottom of the ninth, when Lake Erie tried to close out the Oilers and hold onto a two-run lead.
But Ryan O'Malley's two-run home run off of Storm reliever Mitch Sorensen tied things up and gave the Oilers new life. Sorensen had been in the game since the fifth inning, when Lake Erie starting pitcher Tyler Bryant was removed. In the ninth inning, Sorensen and the Storm struggled to find that third out, even after giving up the home run. With a runner on third and two outs, the score tied a four, a passed ball by Lake Erie allowed the Oilers runner to score, giving Findlay a victory in walk-off fashion.
For Findlay, starting pitcher Anthony Kyle was stellar in this one, going seven innings and only giving up one earned run on four hits, striking out nine. But it would be reliever Bailey McCord who got the win for the Oilers. Mitch Sorensen was stuck with the loss for the Storm.
