Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) — On a warm Thursday evening, the Lake Erie women's soccer team lost in double overtime to Walsh, 2-1. The loss puts the Storm at 0-4 on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 3-0 in the conference-only 2020-21 season.
The scoring started in the eighth minute, when Walsh's Sydney Rice got a goal, with Haley Dancer assisting, to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 advantage early. But the Storm would not let that faze them, as they came back in the 26th minute and evened up the score, thanks to the foot of senior forward Carley Kandel, assisted by sophomore defender Baylor Fortune.
And that's how the score would stay for over 80 minutes, as neither side was able to break the stalemate. Walsh absolutely dominated in shots taken, taking 36 compared to Lake Erie's four. But Storm goalkeeper Megan Biddell saved 14 shots-on-goal in the contest, seven times as many as Walsh's Maura Hickey. The Cavaliers also saw a player be given a yellow card—Maddie Malinowski, in the 101st minute.
But that was not enough to trip up Walsh, who finally ended things in the 108th minute, when Hannah Stein got the assist from Hannah Bowman and scored the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers.
After another promising effort out of her players in this one though, Storm head coach Reni Lawrence is surely optimistic for what her team can accomplish in the rest of the season. The next time they will take to the field will be Tuesday, when they travel to Ursuline. That game is set to take place at 3:00 p.m. EST.
