Box Score 4 The Lake Erie Storm baseball team traveled to Cedarville this weekend to face off with the Yellow Jackets. Unfortunately for the Storm though, Cedarville got the best of them in all four contests.
Game 1
Game 1 was the least successful one for Lake Erie, as the Storm lost 13-2. Registering only three hits compared to five errors in the game, this was one that head coach Gary Vaught and his players would like to forget. Right fielder Luis Vergara-Schoonewolff went 1-3 with two RBI, and starting pitcher Tyler Bryant went 5.0 innings, allowing only one earned run on four hits. But other than that, there wasn't too much else that was redeeming about Game 1 of this four-game showdown with the Yellow Jackets.
Game 2
The second game of the series saw Lake Erie perform much better than it had earlier on Friday, sending things into extra innings before ultimately losing to Cedarville, 6-5, playing eight innings in a game only scheduled to go seven.
At the plate, several Storm batters reached base multiple times, including second baseman Drew Donaldson, who went 2-4 with two RBI. On the mound, Ryan Middendorf pitched most of the game, giving up five runs and seven hits in 6.2 innings of work. The Storm led 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Middendorf, along with reliever Anthony Berrios Jr., allowed three runs (all of which were credited to Middendorf), causing the game to be extended. The next inning in the bottom of the eighth, Berrios Jr. walked second baseman Micah Stewart with the bases loaded, causing Kale Ebling to score the winning run for Cedarville to end the first day of action between the two clubs.
Game 3
But alas, a new day spelled a fresh start for the Storm, who remained close with Cedarville in Game 3. Despite the fact that they ended up losing by a score of 2-0, Lake Erie played well.
Cade Wendel pitched all six innings for the Storm, giving up just two runs on five hits, striking out five. But Wendel's good day was no match for Cedarville starter Noah Cline's stellar performance. Cline allowed no runs, no walks, and only two hits in 6.1 innings of work for the Yellow Jackets, striking out five himself. Riley Landrum then came in to finish the job and clinch yet another victory for Cedarville.
Game 4
If the first game of the doubleheader Saturday was lacking in offensive production for the Storm, they made up for it in the second game, scoring eight runs on 13 hits. Right fielder Eddie Morris went 3-5 with a double, an RBI and a run in the game, while catcher Scott Fernald also grabbed a double in this one. Additionally, Trace Peterson had two RBI, and Donaldson, Fernald, and Paxton had one each (along with Morris).
But the trouble for Lake Erie was that, despite their strong offensive showing, Cedarville's was just as strong. Shortstop Payton Eeles went 4-5, and two more players got three hits in the game. Outfielder Austin Brown also got three walks. RBIs abounded for the Yellow Jackets as well, with six different players getting in on the act.
Neither team saw any pitcher last more than 3.2 innings in this standard nine-inning affair. Cedarville starter Trace Gillis gave the Storm an early advantage, allowing six earned runs on 10 hits. However, the Yellow Jackets roared back in the later innings, ultimately wearing out a Storm bullpen that was fatigued from a long weekend of action. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the score was deadlocked at eight-all. Then catcher Daniel Sewak stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI single, to give Cedarville a walk-off victory and sweep of the series.
The Storm now look to bounce back next week, when they travel to Findlay for four games on Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to check out lakeeriestorm.com for video, live stats and more for all of those games.
