Box Score 2 (Clermont, Fla.) - The Lake Erie softball team dropped a pair of games on day one of The Spring Games in Florida on Saturday.
The Storm (0-6) were defeated by Ashland (3-3) 5-2 and then fell to Indianapolis (10-5) 0-6.
Against Ashland, Lake Erie responded with one run after giving up two runs in the first inning. The first run came off the bat of freshman Kiya Smith, this was Smith's first collegiate homer and the first team home run this season. The Eagles would go on to score another two runs at the top of the fourth. Smith earned her second RBI on the day driving in Payton Brownlee on a single in the fifth inning.
Lake Erie recorded four hits, compared to the five by Ashland. Freshman Grace Hammer started and picked up the loss, pitching four and one-third innings giving up five hits and striking out three.
A dominant pitching performance by Indianapolis pitcher Hallie Waters quieted the bats in the second game of the doubleheader for the Storm. UIndy scored on three runs in the first inning and would go on to score three more in the fourth and that was enough to hold a lead throughout the game.
Alyssa Johnson collected the lone hit for Lake Erie. UIndy had three players rack up multiple hits as they finished with ten hits as a team.
Junior pitcher Parker Viele pitched four innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with one strikeout. Carly Rowland threw two innings in relief, giving up one hit and striking out three.
Lake Erie continues play Monday, March 10 taking on Quincy and Southwest Minn. St. at 10:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m in Clermont, Fla.
