Box Score (PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – Kaleb Vaughn recorded his first double-double of the season in leading Lake Erie to a 71-62 bounce-back win over Kentucky Wesleyan at the Osborne Center Saturday afternoon. For the Storm (13-9, 7-5), they avenged last Thursday's loss and picked up much-needed points in the G-MAC ratings against the Panthers (7-12, 6-6).
As a result of the win, Head Coach Kyle Conley picked up his 50th career win after taking the position in the 2017-18 season.
Vaughn showed his dominance early as he scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the first half on 7-of-9 from the field. Six of those baskets came in the midst of a 15-4 run that brought Lake Erie from down six to a 28-23 lead.
"Basically, the whole week in practice, coach has been emphasizing me catching the ball in the post, being strong with it, and giving us a post presence," said Vaughn after the game. "This is a great win for us. We layed an egg when we went to Kentucky and Tennessee and lost two games. We thought we were better than we were and they put us in check, gave us a reality check, so we had to come back here and play our butts off."
After lead changed hands a few times at the end of the half and at the start of the second, Gabe Kynard (Sr., Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) drained a 3-pointer to give the Storm the lead for good. The basket ignited an 11-2 run which was capped by another triple from Jacob Plantz (Fr., Genoa, Ohio / Genoa).
Lake Erie carried the momentum forward and pushed the lead to as many as 16 before Kentucky Wesleyan cut the deficit back to single digits before time ran out.
Vaughn finished with 10 rebounds and helped the Storm control the glass by a 43-33 margin. He was 9-of-15 from the field to help Lake Erie bounce back and shoot 43.5% on the day.
Three other starters finished in double-figures as Kynard followed with 17, Plantz added 15, and Harrison Riggs (Jr., Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) tallied 10.
For the Panthers, they were held to 36.9% from the field, but were led by a strong performance from Zach Hopewell who led the game with 23 points on 9-of-18 from the field with four 3-pointers.
The Storm will hit the road once again, first taking a trip to the state capital to take on Ohio Dominican on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. as the first part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
