Storm Takes Rubber Match at Hillsdale, 4-3

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded a three game series with the Hillsdale College Chargers on Sunday (April 29) afternoon.

The Storm held off a late Hillsdale rally for a 4-3 win in the rubber match. Lake Erie won two out of three games against the Chargers.

After being held scoreless in the first two innings, the Storm broke through in the third inning. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) opened the inning with a double to right field. After a popout, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) singled Rua over to third. Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) plated Rua with a RBI groundout.

Lake Erie added three more runs in the fifth inning, taking a 4-0 lead. Rua led off the inning with a single. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) singled and Williams was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no outs. Carver singled two runners home and then Williams scored on a throwing error by the first baseman on the play. Three runs scored on the play as Carver made it 4-0 Storm.

Hillsdale scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, pulling within one. Lake Erie defeated the Chargers 4-3.

Rua, Birchmeier, Williams and Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) each had two hits as the Storm managed ten hits in the game. Rua scored twice while Birchmeier and Williams each scored once. Carver accounted for all four RBI for the Storm.

Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as he tossed eight strong innings. In eight innings, he allowed two runs on four hits with one walk and ten strikeouts. Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) allowed one run in one inning of work.

The Storm will travel to Fairmont State for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday (May 1) at 1:00 PM.
