Late Storm Rally Falls Short at Notre Dame

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie College baseball team was in action today as they were defeated by Notre Dame College, 8-7.

The Storm jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) got the inning started with a one out walk.  Later in the inning, Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) singled to left field and drove home Williams.  After a scoreless second inning, the Falcons tacked on a run in the bottom of the third and tied the game at one run apiece.  After a scoreless fourth inning, the Storm regained their lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs.  Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) got the inning started with a two out single, and he advanced to third on an error by the pitcher.  The next batter up, Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) walked and later advanced to second.  Williams singled to centerfield and plated both Rua and Paxton to put the Storm up 3-1.  The Falcons responded with six runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth to take an 8-3 advantage.  The Storm battled back as they loaded the bases in the seventh, and cut the Falcons lead to 8-6.  Forrest Longeway (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) led off the inning with a single and was singled home by Peterson.  The next batter up, Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Williams who singled earlier in the inning.  Later in the inning, Samuel Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) singled to centerfield to drive in Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg), who reached on an error.   The Storm continued to rally in the eighth as Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) led off the inning with a single, and a single by Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) put runners on first and second.  A sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, and Longeway drove in Erzen with a single, to make the score 8-7 in favor of the Falcons.  The Storm was unable to complete the rally and fell, 8-7.      

Lake Erie will return to the diamond Thursday (April 26) when they travel to take on Gannon, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
