Northwood Takes Doubleheader Against Storm

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team was defeated by the Northwood University Timberwolves on Saturday (April 8) afternoon on the road.

Northwood won game one 11-6 and took the nightcap by a final of 15-0.

GAME ONE

Lake Erie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sam Browning (Cincinnati, Ohio / Archbishop McNicholas) singled and moved to third on a double by Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg). Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y. / McQuaid Jesuit) brought Browning home with a sacrifice fly.

Northwood scored three in the first, one in the second and two in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead over the Storm.

Lake Erie cut the lead to 6-3 with two runs in the fifth. Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) singled and Birchmeier followed with a single three batters later. Bovenzi plated Erzen with a RBI single while Birchmeier scored on a rundown.

The Timberwolves added one run in the fifth and four in the sixth, pushing the advantage to 11-3.

The Storm loaded the bases with two singles and a walk in the seventh. Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) cleared the bases with a three-run double to right field. Northwood took game one 11-6.

Birchmeier finished with a three hit game while Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) had two hits in the game.

GAME TWO

Northwood scored four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Storm put two runners on in the fourth inning but could not convert a scoring opportunity. The Timberwolves scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and seven in the seventh en route to the doubleheader sweep.

Five different players had a hit for the Storm in game two. Birchmeier finished with a four hit day with a hit in the second game.

Zavin Orr (Cambridge, Ohio / Cambridge) pitched a scoreless eighth inning in a relief appearance with two strikeouts.

The Storm and the Timberwolves will resume the series on Sunday (April 9) with a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
