Big Innings Doom Storm Against Ashland

MENTOR, Ohio- The Lake Erie College baseball team began their series with the Ashland University Eagles on Friday (April 28) with a doubleheader at Lake Catholic High School.

The Storm dropped game one 11-3 and fell in the nightcap 12-2.

GAME ONE

Lake Erie jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a passed ball and came home on a groundout by Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf).

Ashland scored four runs in the fourth and four in the fifth for an 8-1 lead.

The Storm got a run back in the sixth inning when Birchmeier singled home Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview), who opened the inning with a single. Lake Erie trailed 8-2.

The Eagles added three runs in the seventh then the Storm responded when Carver drilled his first homerun of the year to left field. Lake Erie fell 11-3 in the first game.

Birchmeier and Paxton each had two hits in the opening game of the doubleheader.

GAME TWO

Ashland scored four runs in the 1st inning for a 4-0 lead.

Lake Erie cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the second inning. The Storm got three straight singles in the inning, including a RBI single by Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston).

The Storm pulled within two runs with a solo run in the fourth. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) led off by reaching on an error. He rounded the bases with a wild pitch and a single and scored on a double play.

Ashland scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the eighth for a 12-2 lead. The Eagles swept the doubleheader 12-2.

Paxton, Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele), Zavin Orr (Cambridge, Ohio / Cambridge) and Armstrong all had two hits in the second game.

The Storm will continue the series with a doubleheader at Ashland on Sunday (April 30).
