TIFFIN, Ohio— The 12th-ranked Lake Erie College faced 13th-ranked Tiffin University in their final Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) dual Wednesday (Feb. 10).
The Dragons won in a close battle, 20-15. However, the Storm clinched a share of the GLIAC Championship, their third in a row.
The 125-pound match featured Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) and Giuseppe Penzone. Penzone scored the first points with a takedown, matched by a Glogouski escape. After an injury stoppage, Penzone increased his lead with a reversal. A nearfall brought the lead to 8-1. Glogouski was awarded a point for a violation, followed by an escape to cut the lead to five. In the second period, Glogouski opened with an escape, cutting the lead to 8-4. Glogouski rode out the third but was unable to overcome the lead, falling 8-4.
The 133-pound match featured Austin Gillihan, ranked sixth in the region (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) and Lawrence Blackful, ranked fifth in the region. Gillihan scored the first takedown. He worked the takedown to a four-point nearfall. He scored two more nearfall points by the end of the period. In the second, Blackful rode out the two minutes. Blackful was awarded a point in the third but Gillihan secured the decision, 8-1.
The 141-pound match featured Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and Travis Slayer, ranked third in the region. After a scoreless first, Ross scored the first point with an escape. Late in the period, Slayer scored a takedown. The lead increased to two with an escape to open the third. Ross tied it with a takedown with just over a minute to go. Ross gave Slayer the escape. Slayer was called for stalling, sending the match to overtime. In the extra session, Ross scored a takedown after a long scramble to pick up the 6-4 decision.
The 149-pound match featured Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) and Mike Screptock, ranked third in the region. After a scoreless first, Boggs opened the scoring with an escape but Screptock quickly completed a takedown. Boggs tied the bout at two with an escape. Screptok regained the lead with an escape in the third. Late in the period, Boggs scored a takedown to pick up the 4-3 decision.
The 157-pound match featured Conner Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) and Sam Viengmany, ranked third in the region. Viengmany scored the first points with a takedown late in the opening period. Nemec cut the lead in half with a quick escape to open the second. Once again, Viengmany scored a late takedown, giving him a 5-1 lead after two. Viengmany had a third takedown in the third, for the decision win.
The 165-pound match featured Hunter Turner (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) and Jett Hurt. Hurt scored a takedown and worked it to a pin, as the Dragons took the lead, 11-9.
The 174-pound match featured Nicholas Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston), ranked third regionally, and Chris Baker. Vandermeer completed a takedown midway through the first. Baker cut the lead in half with an escape. In the second, Vandermeer scored a reversal to take a 4-1 lead. A two-point nearfall pushed the lead to five heading into the third. Baker escaped to cut the lead to four but with a point of riding time, Vandermeer picked up the 7-2 decision.
The 184-pound match featured Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and Jared Chambers. After a scoreless first, Hughes got on the scoreboard with an escape. Chambers reversed from the bottom late in the third to pick up the 2-1 decision.
The 197-pound match featured nationally eighth-ranked Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) and fifth-ranked Jake Cramer. Rosborough scored the first takedown and a two-point nearfall midway through the first. Cramer then reversed it, cutting the lead in half. The back-and-forth continued as Rosborough reversed it, followed by a Cramer escape late in the period. Rosborough increased his lead to 7-3 with an escape in the second. Late in the period, Rosborough scored another takedown after a long scramble. Cramer escaped to start the third, cutting the lead to 9-4.
The heavyweight match featured Noah Hosking (Milford, Mich./Milford) and second-ranked Garrett Gray. Gray scored a quick takedown, working it to a pin to give the Dragons the win.
The Storm is back at Tiffin on Feb. 21 for the Bergmania Duals.
