Homestand Ends on Down Note as Storm Drops Two to Cedarville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Visiting Cedarville put on an offensive show in the first game en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Lake Erie College softball team Wednesday (March 28) at Painesville Kiwanis Recreation Park.  The 17-2 and 5-1 losses made for a disappointing end to the Storm's 10-game home stand.

Three batters into the opener Cedarville (17-10) had a 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run home run by Kelsey Wilson.  Sophomore Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer of her own, her first of the season, to make it a one-run game.

The Yellow Jackets broke it open in the second, scoring seven times, including a pair of homers.  Kelsey Warrington hit the team's second three-run blast in as many innings and Shelby Young added a solo shot in the frame. Wilson and Young each added RBIs in the fifth and the Jackets tacked on five more runs in the fifth.

Wilson went 4-for-5 at the plate with a game-high six RBI, while four other Yellow Jackets had two hits. Brotzman went 3-for-3 to lead the Storm (5-16), but the rest of the Lake Erie lineup had just three hits combined against Cecilia DeBartolo (4-4).

Cedarville struck quickly again in game two, scoring twice in the top of the first on a Young sacrifice fly and Warrington double.  Again the Storm cut the deficit to a single run in the bottom of the first and again it was Brotzman, this time singling in redshirt freshman Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry).

The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the fourth and then Wilson capped off a stellar day with a solo home run in the fifth to make it a 5-1 game.

Lake Erie had 11 hits in the game against Missy Murphy, but couldn't convert several opportunities into runs, stranding 12 runners in the game. Murphy (3-1) allowed just the one run in seven innings, walking two and striking out three.

Sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts in defeat.

Wilson had three hits in game two to finish the day 7-of-9 with seven RBI.  Brotzman, Klemp and senior Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) each had two hits for LEC.

The Storm travels to Tiffin University this weekend for a four-game series starting Saturday, March 31.
