PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Last
year, the softball teams from Lake Erie College and Edinboro
University played a pair of one-run thrillers. The two teams played
another nail-biter on Friday afternoon (March 26) with the Fighting
Scots emerging for a 2-1 win in the opener of a doubleheader at
Slattery Field. Edinboro also won the nightcap, 9-0, to notch
the sweep.
In the opener, Marissa Pullo,
who had a game-high three hits, singled to score Kari Falk in the
top of the seventh inning for a 2-1 lead. The Storm (4-18),
held hitless by Beth Mullins through the first six innings, got
back-to-back singles from sophomore Ali Heming (Cincinnati,
Ohio/Turpin) and junior Danielle Finkler (Chardon,
Ohio/Berkshire) with two outs in the bottom of the
seventh, but Mullins came back to strike out Brittany Athey
(Vermillion, Ohio/Vermillion) to end it.
Mullins (4-6) allowed just the
two hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out
six. Pam Bykowski (Perry, Ohio/Perry/Armstrong
Atlantic) allowed just one earned run on seven hits in the
tough-luck complete game loss. She walked four and struck out
seven, falling to 1-4 on the year.
Pullo had three more hits and
drove in a pair of runs in the second game as the Scots
(7-9) banged out 12 hits in the victory. Aimee Sisson had
two hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning to
kick-off the scoring. Edinboro led 5-0 heading into the fifth,
then scored nine times to close out the contest.
Amanda Shields earned the win,
surrendering just three hits in five scoreless
innings. Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg,
Ohio/Reynoldsburg) took the loss (1-7), allowing four runs
on five hits in two innings. Heming went one-for-two in game
two to finish with three hits on the day for Lake Erie.
The Storm will look to snap its
five-game losing streak on Saturday (March 27) at Urbana
University.
