BOXSCORE GAME 1
BOXSCORE GAME 2
PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College
softball team matched its hours-old season-high of 10 runs scored
in a 10-4 win in game one of a doubleheader at Clarion on Saturday
(March 20) afternoon. The Golden Eagles snapped a 4-4 tie in the
bottom of the seventh in game two for a walkoff 5-4 win in the
second game.
The Storm (4-14) scored five times in the fourth
inning in Saturday's opener to take a 6-3 lead and then broke
the game open in the fifth with four more runs to make it 10-3.
Starting with Friday's doubleheader opener at Findlay and
ending with game one on Saturday, the Storm had scored 14 runs in
its last three fourth innings.
Danielle Finkler (Chardon,
Ohio/Berkshire) brought in the first two runs in the fourth with
a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3. The Storm then got three
straight doubles from Jessica Smith (Columbus,
Ohio/Whitehall), Lindsey Pennell (Columbus,
Ohio/Westland) and Haley Rathge (Edon,
Ohio/Napoleon) and an RBI single by Megan Foley
(Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) to bring in three more runs to
grab a 6-3 lead.
Lake Erie tacked on four more runs in the fifth
inning, with the help of two Clarion errors, to break the game
open.
Lauren Malicki
(Independence, Ohio/Independence) earned the win for Lake Erie, tossing five
innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in five
innings. Pam Bykowski (Perry, Ohio/Perry/Armstrong
Atlantic) was terrific in relief tossing two innings of
no-hit ball.
Foley was 4-for-4 with three RBI in game one and
Smith had three hits and scored three times to lead the Storm
offensively.
The Storm fell behind 4-1 through two innings in
the day's second game, but scored twice in the fifth to cut
the Clarion lead to 4-3. Brittany Sostre (Parma,
Ohio/Valley Forge) knocked a solo home run with one out in
the inning and Jamie Wodecki (Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter
Chanel) ripped an RBI single later in the
inning.
Down to its last out in the seventh and down a
run, Lake Erie rallied to tie the game. Rathge walked and moved to
second on Foley's single. Sostre followed with a two-out RBI
single to tie the game at 4-4. The Storm, though, would eventually
leave the bases loaded after Clarion got Ali Heming
(Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) to ground into an inning-ending
fielder's choice.
Clarion took advantage and broke the tie score
in the bottom of the seventh as Carlie Cook singled home Nicole
Lollo, who tripled, to earn the walk-off win.
Lyndsie Delprato (McDonald,
Pa./Fort Cherry) took the loss, as she came on as a reliever to
start the seventh.
Offensively, Foley had three hits and Sostre (two hits, two RBI)
Heming had two hits apiece.
Lake Erie returns to the field on Tuesday (March
23) for a home doubleheader at Slattery Field against Mercyhurst.
First pitch for game one is slated for 2:30 p.m.
