BOXSCORE
PAINESVILLE, OHIO –
Pfeiffer College scored five runs in the third inning and then took
advantage of five errors by the Lake Erie College baseball team
– including four in a seven-run eighth- and sent the Storm to
its first loss, 14-3, in Misenhemer, N.C. on Monday afternoon
(March 1).
The Falcons (9-10) broke open a
scoreless game with five two-out runs in the third inning, with the
big blow a three-run home run by Eric Shoemaker off of sophomore
Pat Mulligan (Brookfield, Ohio/Brookfield).
The Storm (1-1) got on the board
in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder
Michael Brucchieri (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick).
After Pfeiffer added two more runs in the bottom half of that
inning, Lake Erie responded with two of its own in the fifth with
sophomores Matt Lott (Newark, Ohio/Newark
Catholic) and Jae Leeworthy (Newton Falls,
Ohio/Newton Falls) each driving in runs.
Neither team pushed another run
across until the bottom of the eighth when several Storm miscues in
the field resulted in the Falcons lead going from four to 11. Only
three of the seven runs were earned and Pfeiffer had just four hits
in the frame.
Sophomore Mike Morgan
(Indian Lake, Ohio/Russells Point) continued his hot
hitting with two hits in four at-bats. Mulligan (0-1) allowed
six runs on eight its in 3 1/3 innings.
Jacob Moore (1-0) picked up the
win in relief for the Falcons. Preston Lyon went four-for-five
at the plate and both he and Shoemaker drove in four runs to pace
Pfeiffer.
The Storm's spring break
trip continues on Tuesday, March 2, with a doubleheader at Wingate
University beginning at 2 p.m.
