Box Score Lake Erie College (3-12-1, 1-11 GLIAC) stayed with GLIAC
contender Ohio Dominican University (9-4-3, 5-4-3 GLIAC) throughout
the game and made the most of its chances, resulting in a 2-1 win
at Jack Britt Stadium in Painesville, Ohio. The win is
women's soccer's first as a member of the GLIAC
conference.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the 86th minute,
sophomore forward Kaitlyn
"Skeeter" Holland's (Pickerington,
Ohio/Pickerington North) shot from 35 yards out fell just over the
outstretched hand of ODU goalkeeper Aimee Simone and into the top
of the net. Earlier in the half, Holland picked up the game
tying assist as a beautiful cross found the foot of freshman Misty
Porter (Reno, Nev./North Valleys)
Lake Erie was led by a strong performance by freshman goalkeeper
Megan
Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows). Baldacci made
17 saves in the game, some spectacular second half saves to allow
Lake Erie the chance to make its late rally. For the game, the
Panthers won the battle of shots, 34-7, and corner kicks, 10-1 but
the Storm made the most of their chances.
The teams came out evenly in the first 20 minutes of the game,
but as the first half progressed, the Panthers began to control the
pace. Ohio Dominican began to barrage Lake Erie with shots
and it resulted in a goal by Jennifer Holton from Christen Adams in
the 4nd minute to give Ohio Dominican the 1-0 edge at
half.
The Panthers again controlled the pace in the second half and
Lake Erie was forced to look to counter attack. Those
counters would pay off in the 67th minute when Porter
took that pass from Holland and Porter, Simone and a ODU defender
all collided. The ball squirted free and Porter was first up
and found the empty net.
ODU's final great chance came in the 87th
minute as a close range attempt by ODU's Sierra Patterson
appeared headed for the goal before striking the right goalpost and
spinning back to within Baldacci's reach.
The Storm are in action next on Friday when they face GLIAC foe
Findlay at Slattery Field in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
