PAINESVILLE, OHIO - Coming off one of the biggest victories in
the program's young history, the Lake Erie College football team
looks for its second straight win when it travels to West Liberty
University on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 to take on the Hilltoppers
at 1 p.m. at Russek Field.
Both teams picked up their first wins of the season last
week. The Storm (1-1) defeated Fairmont State University in
overtime at home, 27-24, while West Liberty (1-1) also notched a
home victory by hammering Walsh University 48-17.
THE SERIES: This is the first meeting between
the two schools.
THE BROADCAST: The game will be carried live on
ESPN 970 WFUN AM and streamed online at www.espn970wfun.com as part of
the Lake Erie Football Network with Craig Deas (play-by-play)
calling the action. In addition, West Liberty will have a
live video broadcast of the game on its website at www.hilltoppersports.com.
THE COACHES: Mark McNellie (Baldwin-Wallace
'88) is in his third season at Lake Erie, guiding the program since
its inception as a club sport in 2007, and has posted a career
varsity record of 4-9 (11-11 overall). Prior to being named
head coach at Lake Erie on Aug. 9, 2006, McNellie was an assistant
coach at Mercyhurst College for 17 years.
Roger Waialae (Dubuque '89) is in his fifth season at West
Liberty and has a career record of 29-17. Prior to being named head
coach he was an assistant at the school for 13 seasons.
LAST TIME OUT FOR LAKE ERIE: Sean Bedevelsky's
(Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) four-yard pass to Brandon James
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) in overtime gave the Storm a 27-24 victory
over Fairmont State in the home opener at Britt Memorial Stadium
last weekend. It was Bedevelsky's third TD pass of the game
and fourth TD total, having run one in from three yards out late in
the first half. Fairmont State had taken a 21-14 lead with
just under two minutes to go before the Storm marched 64 yards in
48 seconds to tie the game. The Falcons then kicked a 34-yard
field goal on the first series of overtime before James' winning
grab. The Storm racked up 350 yards of offense in the win,
including 222 through the air and 96 on the ground from senior RB
Tony Howard (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights/Kent
State).
LAST TIME OUT FOR WEST LIBERTY: The Hilltoppers
put up 547 yards of total offense in a 48-17 victory over Walsh
University in their home opener Saturday. Kevon Calhoun
rushed for 103 yards and a pair of TDs and Zach Amedro completed
25-of-36 passes for 358 yards and four scores. Ryan Travis
both caught and threw a TD pass in the win.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Lake Erie plays the second
of three straight on the road next week (Sept. 19) at St. Joseph's
College in Rensselaer, Ind. Kickoff is set for noon CST (1
p.m. in Painesville) at Alumni Stadium.
