Storm Total 20 Hits Against Tiffin

PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 23, 2009) - Lake Erie College had 20 hits Thursday afternoon, but still left Bragg's Field empty-handed, losing to Tiffin University, 8-5 and 13-3. Senior Ben Reed (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) had a good day at the plate, leading the Storm with five hits, three runs and two RBIs in seven at bats.

In game one, the Storm didn't score it's first run until the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch. Then trailing 8-1 going into its last at bat was when Lake Erie decided to turn on the offense. By then the four runs on five straight hits was too little, too late. Reed, Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington), John Christani (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) and Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) all singled in the inning, with Kyle Kemp (Spotsylvania, Ohio/James Monroe) hitting the team's only extra base hit of the game with a double.

Reed finished the game 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs and Stantial  went 2-for-3 with a run as Lake Erie outhit the Dragons 12-1, while also committing one less error than the guests.

In game two, Lake Erie again took some time before scoring, this time crossing the plate for the first time in the fourth inning. The Storm scored twice in the inning on three hits, one each by James, Jae Leeworthy (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) and Ben Willis (Akron, Ohio/Coventry). The Storm then scored another run in the sixth with singles by Reed and James and an RBI double by Harry Konrad (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). A six-run seventh inning for Tiffin was too much for the Storm to overcome as it finished the game with eight total hits.

Reed went 2-for-3 with two runs and James went 2-for-3 with one run.

Lake Erie (13-30) hosts Urbana University in a four-game series this weekend. On Saturday, the teams meet at 1 p.m. at Rec Park then on Sunday go head-to-head at Classic Park beginning at 1 p.m.
