CLEVELAND, Ohio (April 17, 2009) - Lake Erie College defeated
Case Western Reserve University, 9-4 Friday afternoon in a
nine-inning contest. It is the Storm's second win against the
Spartans this year, having defeated them at Recreation Park, 22-1
back on March 19. This time, in Spartan territory, Lake Erie
produced nine runs on 15 hits while freshman pitcher Alex Kanareff
Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) earned the win in the first collegiate
start of his career.
Lake Erie trailed 1-0 after three complete innings before
posting a four-run fourth on three hits, including a double by
sophomore Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), a two-RBI single by
senior Harry Konrad (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and an RBI single by Kyle
Kemp (Spotsylvania, Pa./James Monroe). The Storm then scored two
more runs the following inning and another two in the eighth before
adding its final run in the ninth.
Konrad went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and one run.
Senior Ben Reed (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) went 3-for-5 with one
double and two runs. On the hill, Kanareff went five innings with
three strikeouts and two earned runs. In relief, freshmen Malcolm
Tufts (Concord, Ohio/Riverside), Kyle Koberna (North Ridgeville,
Ohio/Elyria Catholic) and Cameron Castro (Lorain, Ohio/Southview)
combined to throw four innings without giving up a single run,
while striking out four.
Lake Erie (12-23) has a four-game series on the road with
Slippery Rock University this Saturday and Sunday.
