Storm Sweeps Clarion; Now on Five-Game Winning Streak

CLARION, Pa. (April 14, 2009) - Lake Erie College is on a five-game winning streak after sweeping Clarion University Tuesday afternoon, 3-2 and 6-2. The Storm recorded 16 hits, including 10 in the second game, while freshmen pitchers Patrick Mulligan (Brookfield, Ohio/Brookfield) and Glenn Stewart (Strattenville, Pa./James Monroe) earned the victories.

In the first game of the day, Lake Erie scored a run in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead until plating two more runs in the sixth on a two RBI hit by freshman Matt Vanni (Willowick, Ohio/Benedictine). Clarion scored a lone run in the sixth and another in the seventh, falling short of the Storm. Freshman Michael Morgan (Russells Point, Ohio/Indian Lake) went 2-for-3 with one run and freshman Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington) went 2-for-4 with one run. Mulligan went six innings with four strikeouts. He gave up two earned runs. Freshman Cameron Castro (Lorain, Ohio/Southview) earned his second save of the season in one inning of relief.

In the second game, the score was tied at zero until the fourth inning when the Storm scored twice on three hits. Freshman Ryan Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst), senior John Shaposka (Concord, Ohio/Cornerstone Christian) and sophomore Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) had the hits in the inning. Clarion tied the score at two in the bottom half of the inning, before Lake Erie scored two more runs to go ahead in the fifth and then added some insurance with two runs on one hit in the seventh.

Stantial went 2-for-3 with two runs and Shaposka went 2-for-3 with one run. Stewart got his third win of the season after going four innings with no earned runs. Junior Vince Hug (Eastlake, Ohio/North) went three innings without a run and had one strikeout to earn a save.

Lake Erie (10-22) hosts Salem International University at 1 p.m. on Wednesday
