PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 11, 2009) - After splitting with Gannon
University on Friday, Lake Erie College came back to sweep its
guests in day two action, 8-7 and 13-10 in order to post its first
three-game winning streak of the season.
The opening game of the afternoon had the Storm sitting on a
comfortable 7-1 lead after three complete innings before the Golden
Knights rallied their way back to a tie in the top of the seventh
then sending the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the
ninth, sophomore Dan Dowdell (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North
Ridgeville) and freshman Matt Lott (Newark, Ohio/Newark Catholic)
walked to begin the inning. A sacrifice bunt by freshman Matt Vanni
(Willowick, Ohio/Benedictine) moved each of the runners up a base
with just one out to bring up the top of the Storm's order.
Sophomore Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington) was
intentionally walked to load the bases for pinch hitter senior
Harry Konrad (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). In his first and only at bat of
the day, Konrad sent one over the right fielder's head as a
one-hopper off the fence in order to score the winning run.
Sophomore Brandon James (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) went
3-for-5 recording three of the team's hits that went for extra
bases with two doubles and a triple. He had two runs and two RBIs.
Lott went 2-for-3 with one run and sophomore Nick Lovick (Mentor,
Ohio/Mentor) had two RBIs.
Senior starting pitcher Paul Roskos (Timberlake, Ohio/Eastlake
North) went five innings with five strikeouts without a decision.
It was the team's third reliever of the game who earned the win.
Freshman Cameron Castro (Lorain, Ohio/Southview) improved to
2-1 on the season in two innings without a run.
In the final game of the four-game weekend series, both teams
scored in bunches early on with the score being tied at 10 after
just two and a half innings. The Storm went ahead in the bottom of
the third after a single by Stantial and a two-run home run by
senior Ben Reed (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal). It was his second
round tripper of the game after having tied the score at 10 with a
grand slam just one inning prior. Lake Erie then added a single run
in the fifth.
The Storm finished the game with 12 total hits. Stantial went
2-for-3 with three runs, freshman Ryan Rua went 2-for-3 with three
runs, a double and an RBI and senior John Shaposka (Mentor,
Ohio/Cornerstone Christian) was also 2-for-3 with one run and one
RBI. Reed was the big hitter of the game, going 3-for-4 with two
runs and seven RBIs.
Again it was a reliever that earned the victory - freshman Jae
Leeworthy (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) went four and two
thirds innings, striking out two and giving up no runs. It was his
first collegiate win and he is now 1-0.
Lake Erie (8-22) is on a three-game winning streak for the first
time this season. It travels to Clarion University on Tuesday at 1
p.m. for a doubleheader.
