PAINESVILLE, Ohio (April 10, 2009) - Senior Ben Reed
(Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) and freshman Matt Lott (Newark,
Ohio/Newark Catholic) carried big sticks this afternoon, accounting
for eight of the team's 19 total hits as Lake Erie College
split with Gannon University, losing 9-2 and winning 9-3 in the
first half of the weekend's four-game series.
In game one, Lake Erie outhit the Golden Knights 8-7, but
unfortunately the team's run production didn't begin until late in
the game, scoring its first run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice
fly by Reed. The Storm scored its second and final run of the game
in the seventh on an RBI double by pinch hitter Lott. Freshman
Patrick Stantial (West Farmington, Ohio/Southington) went 3-for-3
with one run, a double and a stolen base. Reed went 2-for-2 with a
double and an RBI.
In game two, no scoring occurred for either team until a lead
off home run by Reed in the fourth inning. Then a single by
freshman Kyle Kemp (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe) followed by a
two-run shot by Lott quickly made it 3-0 in favor of the green and
white. Gannon scored its first run in the top of the fifth, but
Lake Erie recorded a six-run, six hit bottom half of the inning to
pull away even further. The hit parade included a
single by sophomore Nick Lovick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), an RBI
double by Reed, singles by Kemp and sophomore Brandon James
(Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), a two-RBI double by senior John
Shaposka (Mentor, Ohio/Cornerstone Christian) and another two-run
blast by Lott.
Reed finished the game 3-for-3 with a run, two doubles and two
RBIs to go along with his home run and Lott went 2-for-3 with two
runs, two home runs and four RBIs. Kemp also went 2-for-3 with
two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
Freshman Glenn Stewart (Strattenville, Pa./Clarion Limestone)
earned his second win of the season after five complete innings of
work in which he struck out two, walked none and gave up only one
earned run.
Lake Erie (6-21) hosts Gannon in a doubleheader at Braggs Field
at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
